-
Albert P. Pisano
Professor and Dean, UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering
"The Institute for Network Medicine brings forward a great example of collaboration between life sciences and engineering, for developing, mastering, and advancing technologies to solve problems, make a positive impact on society."
-
Paul Roben
Associate Vice Chancellor, UC San Diego Innovation & Technology Commercialization
"Innovation is, at its heart, all about people; by putting together a talented, experienced, and optimistic team, the Institute for Network Medicine exemplifies UC San Diego’s “culture of innovation” and broadens the benefits for both the campus and the “regional ecosystem.” The kinds of grand challenges undertaken, and the creative new life-changing solutions invented within the institute will contribute towards UC San Diego’s global recognition as the partner of choice for innovation."
Director's Message
From the Director

At the UC San Diego Institute for Network Medicine (iNetMed), we are driven by a simple belief: nature is complex, but not arbitrary. Across cells, tissues, organisms, and even engineered systems, seemingly different systems often obey the same fundamental principles.
Our mission is to discover those principles—and use them to advance medicine, biology, and engineering. Our vision is both expansive and precise: to understand life across scales while never losing sight of the molecular details that shape health, disease, and ultimately the trajectories of our lives. We seek the big picture, but only by understanding the smallest details that give rise to it. We believe that uncovering these first principles can fundamentally change how we diagnose disease, develop therapeutics, and engineer biological systems.
This pursuit demands more than technological innovation. It requires convergence—the integration of biology, medicine, engineering, computation, mathematics, and physics into a continuously learning framework where ideas, methods, and technologies strengthen one another. Together with colleagues across UC San Diego and partners around the world, we build platforms, models, and technologies that no single discipline—or institution—could create alone.
We are an ambitious, fast-moving, and deeply collaborative community. We embrace problems deemed impossible to solve, knowing that progress is rarely linear, failure is an essential part of this journey, and skepticism is often the sharpest catalyst for better science. We also believe that reducing complexity to its fundamental principles is among the greatest challenges—and greatest opportunities—in science. History reminds us that transformative advances often emerge when seemingly disconnected ideas become connected. That conviction continues to shape everything we do.
Whether you are a student, trainee, scientist, clinician, engineer, entrepreneur, or partner, if you are excited by difficult problems, inspired by bold ideas, and committed to making a lasting impact, we invite you to join us on this journey.
Because the future of medicine will not be discovered by disciplines working alone—but by people who are willing to connect them.
